Goal setting

Goal Setting

We hear alot about goal setting and it's importance. I will confess I was not a big goal setter and really for a long time thought that is was a waste of time. I mean I was like I can be doing something so much more productive that setting goals I know where I want to go. Well let me tell you........I was so wrong.

One day I was talking, more like complaining with one of my mentors and I was telling him that I could not understand why I wasn't getting where I wanted to go and that I was working really hard. He asked me what my goals to help me get there were? I was like what? He said tell me what your goals are that will help you reach the end of your journey. I was like I don't have any....he started laughing, which made me furious and then told me I was like so many others that just pick up a hand full of mud and sling it at the wall to see how much sticks. I was so mad because he was making fun of me. I could have killed him. So I am standing there wondering what goals have to do with me getting where I wanted to go and thinking do I really want to ask him what he means? I mean I was already mad, but in the back of my mind I kept hearing the only stupid question is the one you don't ask......so I said to him what do you mean? He said he was glad that I asked and gave me this to think about.

He said Kris when you want to build a house do you run out and start nailing boards together? I laughed and said no! I thought he was still making fun of me at this point. He said what do you do? I said well you have to have a plan or blueprint. He said exactly. With that plan you have to have some goals to measure your progress as well. I stood there and now I really felt dumb. A light bulb went off over my head and I realized that goals setting is just a tool for measuring progress and with out it you don't know if you are moving forward or backward. OMG why oh why did I not get this sooner?

Well that has been awhile back and I can tell you that every time I set goals I always get things done and faster than I think I will. So if you are like alot of people myself included that thought or thinks that goal setting is a waste of time.....well think again!

If I can leave you with one thing, learn from my mistake. Set goals and get good at it. It will take a little time to get there but I promise you will save way more time by taking a few minutes to set those goals than if you are just doing it.

  1. Great post Kris, you've got to have some focus and direction or you'll just be killing time.
